Shop K-Beauty and you'll keep running into the same three names: centella, heartleaf and rice. All three are known as gentle, all three are on countless labels. They still don't do the same thing. Here's the short version, so you can choose deliberately instead of buying all three.
What's the difference between centella, heartleaf and rice?
Centella asiatica is the classic for irritated, red skin and a weakened barrier. Heartleaf (Houttuynia cordata) suits skin that's prone to redness and breakouts at the same time. Rice is less a calming ingredient than a hydration and glow ingredient for dull, dry skin. In short: centella for the barrier, heartleaf for restless combination skin, rice for radiance.
When is centella the right choice?
Centella contains plant compounds like madecassoside and asiaticoside, used in skincare mainly for calming and supporting the barrier. It's a good choice when your skin gets tight and red after exfoliation, retinal or cold weather. It's usually very well tolerated and fits into almost any routine.
When is heartleaf the right choice?
Heartleaf is a plant traditionally used in Korea for soothing and is rich in flavonoids. In skincare it's mostly used for skin that's red, shiny and breakout-prone at once. The research base is smaller than centella's, but it's long established in Korean skincare, and often the better pick for combination skin with breakouts.
When is rice the right choice?
Rice extract and fermented rice deliver hydration and support a more even, brighter look. It's not the strongest option for acute redness. It's ideal when your skin looks dull, dry or tired rather than irritated.

Can I combine centella, heartleaf and rice?
Yes. None of them is an aggressive active, so they layer well, for example rice as a light hydrating layer with a centella or heartleaf cream on top. But you don't need all three; start with the one that matches your main concern.
When is it different?
If your skin reacts to many plant extracts, patch-test each new product on a small area for a few days. Strong, persistent redness, burning or pustules can point to rosacea or another skin condition, which belongs with a professional. This article doesn't replace individual medical advice.

FAQ
Is heartleaf better than centella?
Not better, different. Centella is the first pick for an irritated barrier; heartleaf for redness and breakouts together.
Which ingredient is best for redness?
For redness from a weakened barrier, usually centella. For redness with breakouts, often heartleaf. Rice isn't the first pick for redness.
Is rice skincare suitable for oily skin?
Yes, in light textures like toners or milky formulas. Rice hydrates without feeling heavy.
Can I use these during pregnancy?
All three products are marked as pregnancy-safe on our site. If you're unsure, ask your doctor.
