As soon as it gets cold, lips feel tight, flake and crack at the edges. Many people reapply constantly, lick their lips without noticing, or pick at the flakes. Unfortunately, that's often what makes it worse. Here's what actually helps in winter.
Why do lips get so dry in winter?
Lip skin is much thinner than facial skin and has almost no oil glands of its own, so it loses moisture faster and protects itself less well. Cold air outside and dry heated air inside speed up that water loss. The fix is a combination: add moisture, then seal it in with a protective layer.
What makes dry lips worse?
Licking your lips. Saliva evaporates quickly and takes extra moisture with it. Lips feel drier afterwards than before.
Pulling off flakes. It often tears healthy skin and leaves tiny wounds.
Exfoliating too often. A lip scrub makes sense, but once or twice a week at most and never on cracked lips.
Moisture without a protective layer. A purely watery product without nourishing oils or butters can evaporate quickly in very dry air.
The winter lip routine
Evenings, once or twice a week: a gentle scrub. Only if lips are flaky, not cracked. Massage in gently, don't scrub hard.
During the day: moisture plus protection. A thin layer of a hydrating lip mask, reapplied as needed.
At night: a rich sleeping mask. A thicker layer with butters or waxes, left on overnight. This is the most important step.
Don't skip sun protection. Even in winter, especially in the mountains, where snow strongly reflects UV.
When is it different?
If the corners of your mouth stay cracked and red, if lips don't improve after two to three weeks of care, or if they burn, itch and swell after a new product, inflammation or an intolerance may be involved, and that belongs with a professional. This article doesn't replace individual medical advice.
Our picks

The TOCOBO Lemon Sugar Lip Mask is our pick for the weekly scrub: sugar crystals gently lift flakes and leave a nourishing layer behind, vegan. It contains lemon peel oil, so don't use it on cracked or sore lips, and use it in the evening as the brand recommends. > Add to cart now

The ARENCIA Honey Glazed Collagen Lip Mask is our pick for daytime: a light texture with glycerin, niacinamide, panthenol and peptides that also works as a lip balm. Not vegan (contains collagen). > Add to cart now

The MEDICUBE PDRN Lip Sleeping Mask is our pick for night: shea butter and waxes form a protective layer, bisabolol calms. Not vegan, since the brand says its PDRN is salmon-derived. For what PDRN can realistically do, see our PDRN article. > Add to cart now
What we deliberately don't recommend: cooling lip masks for cracked lips. The cooling effect feels fresh but can sting on sore spots.
Small tip: lip masks cost CHF 10-15, a good add-on when you're just short of free shipping from CHF 50. As gifts they pair well with our K-Beauty gift sets. If your face feels tight in winter too, read our article on indoor heating.
FAQ
What helps dry lips fast?
A thick layer of a rich lip mask in the evening, left on overnight. During the day, reapply regularly and don't lick your lips.
Does a lip scrub help chapped lips?
Only flaky ones, not cracked ones. On open cracks a scrub can sting and slow healing.
How often should I use a lip mask?
A sleeping mask every night makes sense in winter; a scrub once or twice a week at most.
Why are my lips still dry despite lip balm?
Common reasons are lip licking, over-exfoliating, watery products with no protective layer, or an intolerance to fragrance or flavouring. If nothing improves in two to three weeks, get it checked.
