You look in the mirror and see tiny dark dots on your nose. Pore strips, squeezing, scrubbing, and a few days later they're back. That's often because they aren't blackheads at all, but sebaceous filaments, which need a different approach.
Are these blackheads or sebaceous filaments?
Sebaceous filaments are normal structures inside pores that channel oil to the surface. They look grey or beige, are spread evenly over the nose and chin, and refill within a few weeks after removal. True blackheads are clogged pores with a clearly dark, often slightly raised dot. You can make sebaceous filaments smaller, but you can't remove them permanently.
The difference at a glance
| Sebaceous filaments | Blackheads | |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | grey, beige | dark to black |
| Pattern | even across nose and chin | scattered, irregular |
| What it is | normal oil channel in the pore | clogged pore |
| Comes back? | yes, always | less often if the pore stays clear |
| Goal | make them look smaller | keep the pore clear |
Why do blackheads turn black?
A blackhead forms when oil and dead skin cells clog a pore. Because the pore stays open, the mix is exposed to air and darkens. The colour has little to do with dirt, which is why harder scrubbing doesn't help: the problem sits inside the pore, not on the surface.
How do I get rid of blackheads on my nose?
BHA instead of scrubbing. Salicylic acid (BHA) is oil-soluble and can get into the pore where oil and cells build up. Start two to three evenings a week and only increase if your skin stays calm.
Oil-cleanse in the evening. A cleansing oil dissolves sebum and sunscreen better than foam alone. For the right order, see our article on double cleansing.
A clay mask once a week. Kaolin and bentonite absorb excess oil, so pores look clearer for a while afterwards.
Don't squeeze. Squeezing can inflame the pore, leave redness and stretch the pore wall. Pore strips only remove the tip and irritate sensitive skin.
Be patient. Visible change usually takes four to six weeks of regular use.
When is it different?
Using acid pads, an acid toner and retinal at the same time quickly becomes too much. For finding the right frequency, see our article on toner pads. Inflamed spots, nodules or scarring call for a dermatologist rather than skincare alone. This article doesn't replace individual medical advice.
Our picks
The BEAUTY OF JOSEON Green Plum Refreshing Toner: AHA + BHA is our pick for the BHA step: salicylic acid with glycolic acid in a mild toner, fragrance-free and vegan. The acid concentration isn't disclosed, so on sensitive skin we suggest starting two to three evenings a week. > Add to cart now
The ANUA Heartleaf Pore Clay Pack is our pick for the weekly mask: kaolin and bentonite absorb oil, heartleaf and centella calm. Rinse after 10-15 minutes rather than letting it dry out completely. > Add to cart now
What we deliberately don't recommend: cleansers loaded with fragrant extracts for daily use on sensitive skin, and pore strips. Unsure whether heartleaf or centella suits you? See our centella vs heartleaf vs rice comparison.
FAQ
Can sebaceous filaments be removed permanently?
No. They're a normal part of skin and refill. BHA and oil cleansing make them look smaller and less visible.
Should you squeeze blackheads?
Better not. Squeezing can cause inflammation and redness. If at all, leave it to a professional aesthetician.
How long does BHA take to work on blackheads?
Usually four to six weeks of regular use. Many notice smoother texture after about two weeks.
Do pore strips help with blackheads?
Only briefly. They remove the tip, not the cause, and can irritate sensitive skin.
